Tribute to Christine Oddy (1956 to 2014)

Christine was a Trustee of the Nicaragua Solidarity Campaign for the past 11 years. She was an advocate for international human rights and solidarity and a member of the European Parliament from 1989 to 1999. On losing her seat as an MEP she made a huge contribution to the Nicaragua Solidarity Campaign as well as many other campaigning organisations. Utilising her political skills she chaired our meetings with a very practical ease and disarming charm. Wherever there was a budget shortfall, for example, she was always very clear thinking in making sure we managed our affairs efficiently. All this despite the very debilitating effects of disease and treatment.
On behalf of trustees and staff I went to Christine’s funeral in Coventry.
In a packed church in her old neighbourhood we heard the colourful accounts of her many passions, travels and achievements. It was a revelation that she worked successfully on so many causes, from the local Coventry Refugee and Migrant Centre to the investigation of human rights abuses in Sri Lanka.
Her long standing commitment and love of Nicaragua and Central America dated back to the many trips she made to the region during the period when she was an MEP and all the work she did in the European Parliament in support of human rights and socialism in the region.
She was an exceptional campaigner, and we can only try to emulate her style and reach her high standards.
